Mattresses and box springs
Mattress short answer: If your trash is collected by LA Sanitation (LASAN), they'll pick up a mattress at no additional charge. Request it at least one business day before your regular trash day through MyLA311, the online form, or 1-800-773-2489, then set it at the curb for your normal trash day. You can also bring it to a free monthly drop-off event (proof of residency required).

Step by step: free LASAN pickup
- Confirm LASAN collects your trash. Many commercial and some apartment properties use private haulers; check with your landlord.
- Request the pickup at least one business day before your regular collection day through the MyLA311 app, LASAN's online service request form, or 1-800-773-2489.
- Give an itemized list (e.g. "one mattress, one box spring").
- Put it out at the curb for your regular trash day.
Free monthly drop-off
LASAN runs a monthly drop-off at five sites: East Valley District Yard (11050 Pendleton St, Sun Valley), West Valley District Yard (8840 Vanalden Ave, Northridge), Central LA Recycling & Transfer Station (2201 E Washington Blvd), Harbor District Yard (1400 N Gaffey St, San Pedro), and West LA District Yard (2027 Stoner Ave). Bring your current LADWP bill and a state ID. Dates change, so check the official flyer.
What not to do
- Don't leave a mattress on the curb without a pickup request. LA treats that as illegal dumping. Report dumped items to 311.
Need it gone today?
City pickup runs on your trash day. For same-day haul-away from inside the home, a paid junk-removal service is the fallback.

Couches and furniture
LASAN's free, unlimited bulky item pickup takes furniture (couches, tables, chairs), carpet (rolled and tied), toilets, sinks and doors. Book it the same way as a mattress: MyLA311, the online form, or 1-800-773-2489, at least one business day before your trash day. You can also use the free monthly drop-off (2026 Saturdays listed on LASAN's page). (LASAN Bulky Item Pickup)
Appliances (fridges, freezers, AC: freon)
LASAN's bulky-item page lists commercial appliances as prohibited at the curb, but doesn't say clearly how household refrigerators or ACs are handled. Ask LASAN at 1-800-773-2489 or MyLA311 before setting one out. (LASAN Bulky Item Pickup)
TVs, computers and electronics (e-waste)
LASAN's bulky pickup accepts electronic waste (TVs, computers, monitors), booked the same way. You can also bring e-waste free to any S.A.F.E. Center. The Washington Blvd. center (2649 E. Washington Blvd.), for example, is open Saturdays & Sundays 9 a.m.–3 p.m. Remove your data first. (LASAN Bulky Item Pickup; S.A.F.E. Centers)
Paint and household hazardous waste
Paint, solvents and chemicals are prohibited at the curb. Take them free to a S.A.F.E. Center (Solvents/Automotive/Flammables/Electronics), which accept paints, stains and solvents, cleaners, pesticides, pool chemicals, auto fluids, batteries, propane cylinders and fluorescent bulbs. Limit 15 gallons or 125 lbs per visit. Locations include Northridge (10241 N. Balboa Blvd.), Sun Valley (11025 Randall St.), Atwater Village (4600 Colorado Blvd.), East LA (2649 E. Washington Blvd.), Playa del Rey (7660 Imperial Hwy., Gate B), San Pedro (1400 N. Gaffey St.) and UCLA (550 Charles E. Young Dr.). Hours vary by site, so check before you go. (S.A.F.E.
